Just thought you might want to know my thoughts regarding the BDIA show at the NEC …
I attended the BDIA Showcase on the Saturday and I have to say I too was disappointed. As a dental laboratory owner apart from Schottlander none of the usual suppliers: WHW, DB Orthodontics, Shu dental, Industrial Plasters, Acorn Polymers, Bracon, etc were there? It was noticeable that half of the available show space was screened off and unused. Many smaller stands were empty, although there was a stand with an artist doing pretty unimpressive glitter paintings and another stand selling make-up?
The stands that were there, seemed to be selling the same thing, no problem if you want a dental chair no chance if you’re after alginate impression material. All in all, pretty disappointing and really not worth the time and foot ache. I will not be attending next year unless there is some radical change which I fear is a little too late.
Surely a shows long term success requires, belief from all who attend, that it will deliver positive results? With a decline in interest, there is a danger that a ‘Tipping Point’ will be reached, whereby the numbers simply aren’t there to ensure the show is financially viable.
Even if it means offering stands for next to nothing to keep the interest alive for a couple of years, the long-term future of a show should always be paramount and more important than short term financial gain. A diverse show that is full and buzzing with new products, ideas and opinion are what everybody looks forward too. To say the 2019 show fell somewhat short of this would by no means be an understatement. One reason I visited the show this year was to decide whether to exhibit in 2020? In this respect, it was certainly worth the investigatory footwork… Not a chance!

Fastbind, Autobond, Col-Tec, Pargon Group, and Encore have all been announced, so lots to see in the finishing section. I hope the press manufacturers take note and also make an appearance. That will make for a great show.
